Choosing the Stone for Your Fountain: Ziarat White, Black Michelangelo, Onyx and Sandstone

The shape of a fountain catches the eye, but the stone decides its whole character. The same three-tier design looks fresh and classic in white marble, bold and royal in black marble, and warm and glowing in onyx. In our Karachi workshop we carve fountains in several natural stones. This guide explains how each one looks, where it works best and what to think about before you choose.

Ziarat white marble: bright and classic

Ziarat white is a pure white marble from Balochistan with soft grey veins. It is the most popular stone for tiered garden fountains because it looks clean and bright in sunlight and matches almost any building. It suits villas, office fronts, hotel gardens and public lawns.

Black Michelangelo marble: bold and dramatic

Black Michelangelo marble is deep black with bright white and golden veins. A black fountain stands out strongly against green grass and light walls, and the stone looks even richer when it is wet. Choose it if you want something different from the usual white fountain.

Black and gold marble: rich and royal

Black marble with warm golden veins gives a royal look, especially when the bowls have carved petal edges. It works well on large lawns and farmhouses where the fountain is the main feature. See Black & Gold Marble Water Fountain.

Black and white marble: modern contrast

For modern homes and offices, rings of black and white marble stacked in contrast give clean lines without heavy carving. See Black & White Marble Fountain.

Onyx: colourful and glowing

Onyx has bands of cream, green, honey and red, and it lets light pass through. That makes onyx fountains look alive, especially indoors or with lights. Every block of onyx is different, so every onyx fountain is one of a kind.

Cream sandstone: warm and traditional

Off-white cream sandstone (known locally as kacha cream) has a soft, warm colour that suits classic buildings and large estates. It carves well into deep leaf patterns. See Tall Hand-Carved Cream Sandstone Fountain.

Grey marble: calm and corporate

Grey marble looks calm and professional and suits company entrances and business parks. We supplied this grey marble fountain for a corporate site in Sukkur.

How to choose

  • Match the building. White and cream suit most buildings; black stands out on light walls; grey suits modern offices.
  • Think about light. Onyx is at its best where light can shine through it, indoors or with lights at night.
  • Think about the look you want. Classic and calm (white), bold and luxury (black), warm and unique (onyx or sandstone).
  • Ask to see the stone. Natural stone varies. We can send photos and videos of the actual block or finished piece before you order.
