What Is Backlit Stone? Natural Stones That Let Light Pass Through
Put a strong light behind most stones and nothing happens. Put a light behind certain natural stones and they start to glow: the veins show up, the colour gets warmer, and a whole wall becomes a soft light. We call these Backlit Stone.
Backlit Stone is a family name
“Stone” is the general word for marble, onyx and granite. In the same way, Backlit Stone is the general name for any natural stone that lets light pass through, whatever its colour or type.
Many people think only onyx can be backlit. Onyx is the best-known example, but it is not the only one. Our rarest stone is a white stone that lets light pass through. We call it White Backlit Stone. Green, honey and pink stones can glow too. What matters is how much light passes through the stone, not its name.

How it works (in simple words)
The stone is cut thin enough for light to pass, polished, and fixed in front of a light source, usually LED panels or strips with a gap behind the stone so the light spreads evenly. When the lights are off, you see a polished stone surface. When they are on, the stone glows from inside.
The exact thickness and lighting depend on the stone and the project, so we test a piece with light before we confirm a design.

How to choose a Backlit Stone
- Ask to see it lit. A stone can look plain in daylight and beautiful when lit, or the other way round. We send photos or video of the slab with a light behind it.
- Pick the colour of the glow. White gives a clean, modern light. Green, honey and pink give a warmer glow.
- Think about the size. Larger panels mean fewer joints in the light.
- Plan the lighting with your electrician or designer early, before the wall is built.
