Afghan Pearl White Marble: A Complete Guide to Sizes, Uses and Projects

Afghan Pearl White marble is the stone we know best. It is a bright white natural marble with soft grey veins, and it is the main stone in our Karachi yard. In this guide we explain what it looks like, the sizes we supply, where it works best, and how it has been used in real homes in Pakistan and in Europe.

What is Afghan Pearl White marble?

Afghan Pearl White is a natural white marble with a clean, bright background and light grey veining. Every slab is a little different, because it is cut from natural stone, so the veins never repeat exactly. When it is polished, the surface reflects light and makes rooms look larger and brighter.

We sell this stone in three main forms:

Sizes: blocks, large slabs and cut-to-size tiles

  • Blocks: large raw blocks, about 20–25 tonnes each, for buyers who cut the stone in their own factory.
  • Large slabs: cut on a gangsaw, up to about 8 × 10 ft (2.4 × 3.0 m). Common sizes are around 6 × 8 ft (1.8 × 2.4 m), 8 × 9 ft (2.4 × 2.7 m) and 8 × 10 ft (2.4 × 3.0 m).
  • Thickness: mostly 2 cm (about 3/4 inch).
  • Cut-to-size tiles: for example 24 × 24 in (61 × 61 cm) and 24 × 48 in (61 × 122 cm). The 24 × 48 in pieces are popular in mosques as prayer-row (musalla) pieces. Other sizes are cut on request.

Why architects choose large slabs: the bigger the slab, the fewer joints on the floor or wall. Fewer joints give a cleaner, more continuous look, which is why architects usually ask for the largest sizes possible.

Finish

Our slabs are polished on an Italian automatic polishing line, with manual polishing for special pieces. Epoxy polish is also available, which fills tiny natural pores and gives a deep, glass-like shine.

3. Staircases

For stairs, the treads are normally 2 cm thick (about 18–20 mm). There are two popular edge styles: a rounded (bullnose) edge, and a 45° mitred edge, where two pieces are cut at 45° and joined so the step edge looks thick and solid. In a luxury home in DHA Karachi, we supplied Afghan Pearl White for the full staircase, matching the white floors. See the Afghan Pearl White Marble Staircase card.

4. Kitchen countertops

In Gulshan, Karachi, we supplied Afghan Pearl White for a kitchen: 2 cm slabs with epoxy polish. Marble in a kitchen needs a little care (wipe acidic spills quickly and keep it sealed). Read the full Gulshan kitchen project story or see the White Marble Kitchen Countertops card.

Afghan Pearl White in Europe: WKG, Poland

Afghan Pearl White is also used by stone companies in Europe. WKG sp. z o.o. sp.k., a stone company in Poland, had already worked with Afghan Pearl White and liked the stone very much (the photo above is from their earlier work). Their director then visited us in Karachi, inspected our Afghan Pearl White blocks, selected the ones he liked and bought raw blocks from us to process in their own factory in Poland.

Caring for white marble

  • Wipe spills quickly, especially lemon, vinegar, tea and other acidic liquids, which can dull the polish.
  • Clean with a soft cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner; avoid strong acids and bleach.
  • Seal the surface, especially on kitchen countertops, and re-seal from time to time.
  • Use mats at entrances to keep sand off polished floors.
