Backlit stone feature wall in a living room

Backlit Onyx Walls: A Complete Guide to Glowing Stone Interiors

A backlit onyx wall turns natural stone into a source of light. When LED lighting is placed behind thin, translucent onyx, the stone glows and its veining becomes the focal point of the room. Here is what you need to know before planning one.

How backlit stone works

Onyx and some other stones let light pass through them. The stone is cut into thin slabs or panels and mounted a short distance in front of an even LED light source. The light shines through the stone, showing its natural colours and patterns.

Where to use backlit onyx

  • Living room and bedroom feature walls
  • Reception desks, bars and kitchen islands
  • Bathroom vanities and spa walls
  • Staircases and ceilings
  • Hotels, restaurants and offices

Planning your backlit wall

  1. Choose the stone. Onyx gives the strongest glow. Colours range from white and honey to green and multi-colour.
  2. Decide the layout. Bookmatched slabs create a mirrored, symmetrical pattern that looks dramatic when lit.
  3. Plan the lighting. Even LED panels or strips give a smooth glow without hot spots. Warm white light suits honey onyx; cooler light suits white and green onyx.
  4. Allow access. Plan how the LEDs can be reached for maintenance in the future.
  5. Share measurements. Exact wall or counter sizes let the stone be cut to fit.

Caring for backlit stone

Clean the surface with a soft cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar or lemon, which can dull the polish. A stone sealer helps protect counters and vanities from stains.
